But I can buy it at the supermarket cheaper…

Recently we’ve had a few comments in regard to some of our prices. The comments typically start out with..

“I can buy eggs at Meijer or Kroger for $3.00. Why are yours so expensive!”

While we understand rising grocery bills, and ourselves walk out of the grocery store stunned by the total at the bottom of the reecipt. I wanted to take a moment to elaborate on the costs that go into the eggs we, and many small farms sell.

  • The cost of the chicks

  • Feed

  • The cost of the coop and fencing an area to allow them to forage safely

  • Raising a chicken for 6 months until it lays its first egg

  • Sustaining the chickens throughout winter after they’ve all but stopped laying for the season.

  • Electricity to run the de-icers to keep their water from freezing in the winter

  • Predator Loss

  • New egg cartons

  • Nesting box materials

  • Brooders and heat lamps for new chicks

  • Not to mention the countless hours that we spend, cleaning, watering, and caring for these animals that rely upon us.

Most of us do it because we love the connection that we have with the animals. So if you see a small scale farmer running a farm stand, whether he charges $3, $5, or even $10. He’s probably loosing money on each and every dozen. Be Kind. Consider buying a dozen. Through those few dollars, he is sharing his passion, and the fruits of many countless hours of unpaid labor.
